Healthy college living
Chances are, the last thing on a high school graduate's mind is developing healthy eating habits in college.
But the "freshman 15" could be here before you know it. And with millions of teenagers overweight in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we all could benefit from some healthy eating guidelines when we move out of the house.
Enter a whole slew of college advice books that address diet as well as issues such as sex and drugs. We read three new ones to determine how helpful they might be and whether we'd give 'em as gifts to graduating seniors...
--"Mindful Eating 101: A Guide to Healthy Eating in College and Beyond" by Susan Albers (Brunner-Routledge, $15.95). We say: This in-depth guide to healthy eating analyzes how different aspects of life affect eating habits, and although it would be beneficial to college freshmen, it is not especially geared toward them.

REVIEWS OF EAT, DRINK & BE MINDFUL
“This book could be a godsend for anyone suffering from lifelong issues around eating, weight, and appearance. It presents a sane and novel approach to finding a balanced relationship to food, eating, and your body through mindfulness. The book is written by someone with obvious depth of experience and savvy who is definitely on your side, whatever your difficulties or challenges. Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful may be just what the doctor ordered, or would have but couldn't—until now.”
—Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., author of Full Catastrophe Living, Arriving at Your Own Door , and Coming to Our Senses
“ Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful will jumpstart your new journey to a healthier life. We each make over 200 mindless eating decisions each day. By using the tips, exercises, and checklists in this book, you can make many of these 200 decisions work for you rather than against you. Albers' insights and personalized approach will inspire change and lead to more balance in your food life and your daily living.”
—Brian Wansink, Ph.D., professor and director of Cornell University Food and Brand Lab, author of Mindless Eating
“ Eat, Drink, and be Mindful is a compassionate, step-by-step workbook to help the diet-weary reader make peace with food, mind, and body. You'll discover your inner eating expert—you!—while putting an end to the inner food fight once and for all.”
— Evelyn Tribole , MS , RD, nutrition therapist and coauthor of Intuitive Eating
“Whether or not you struggle with food or weight, this book is for you! Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful promises to make a real difference in people's lives. All will be nourished and touched by the wisdom it carries.”
—Jenni Schaefer, author of Life Without Ed
“Albers' wonderful new book, Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful , is one of the best workbooks I have seen on the subject of mindful eating. It could prove to be a very worthwhile choice for all those struggling with mindless eating habits. Her book is extremely well organized and very easy to use. It is a very practical, nonjudgmental, and useful manual on how to eat and drink in awareness. A great follow-up workbook to use with her first book, Eating Mindfully .”
—Jeanie Seward-Magee, BSW, Mindful Way course presenter and author of A Mindful Way
“ Eat, Drink and Be Mindful provides you with simple, realistic changes that you can make today to improve your health and well-being. With this book, America is one step closer to mindfully changing its eating habits!”
—James O. Hill, Ph.D., professor of pediatrics University of Colorado , Denver , and author of The Step Diet Book
“ Eat, Drink, and be Mindful is a must-read for anyone who struggles with healthy eating in our fast-paced, weight-obsessed society. Albers's approach is kind, compassionate, and a breath of fresh air. I will recommend this book to all my clients, graduate students, colleagues, and friends.”
—Kathleen Burns Kingsbury, LMHC, CPCC, president of KBK Connections, Inc. and coauthor of Weight Wisdom
